From The Pastor's Desk! |
SouthCentral: New and Improved
The Skylight feels like a long lost friend today. In another
way it looks like a “new” friend! These past weeks have been
the only continuous times that we have not printed a
bulletin weekly. It has been that way from the second Sunday
we came together in August of ’98. I hope that it’s absence
on a weekly basis will cause more appreciation for it,
although that’s not the reason for the change.
Many of the announcements were redundant with the exception
of my article and the weekly statistics. The latest format
will allow us to emphasize so much more, and like any other
monthly periodical; we won’t be as prone to discard it
because it will be full of information for the entire month.
I thank Sister Paula Loftin for the tireless effort she puts
forth and has put forth in this one area of church work
alone. She designs and publishes “The Skylight” for us and
continues to do a professional and a masterful job from
start to finish. In the coming issues you will no doubt
notice other changes and tweaks. There will also be space
for you to contribute in the form of announcements, poetry,
family news and short (and I do mean short) quotes and
articles. Let’s work together and look forward to the
Skylight as a monthly tool of communication for SouthCentral.
Of course, we’re still working on more efficient ways to
make announcements and communicate with the congregation in
general. It may become necessary to eventually publish a
fact sheet or an announcement sheet because of the
increasingly busy schedule we maintain. In the meantime
however please remain attentive to announcements made by the
deacons and myself at service times. A PowerPoint
presentation of our announcements also takes place each
Sunday between Bible classes and worship service.
Construction on The Annex Project Phase II is about to
begin. (As soon as our contractor can accommodate us). It is
because of your support of the Building Fund and the Sunday
Dinners that this is possible. I applaud each and every one
of you who ever contributed anything to this worthwhile
effort. Even though last week was the last Sunday Dinner for
a while, we will still be doing extra things to raise funds
to expand our ministries and improve our buildings and
grounds.
Great things are happening at SouthCentral and we are in
store for a remarkable and memorable summer. It will keep
happening as long as we remember our commitment to God and
to this church family. While vacations are needed and
encouraged, I also encourage you to worship with a
congregation of the church of Christ while you are away. If
you need the addresses, numbers other information about
churches in cities you will be vacating to, please contact
me. Remember also that the obligations and expenses of the
church go on, even when you are not here. For that reason I
urge you to either give your tithes and offerings before you
leave or to make them up as soon as you return. Let’s fill this coming summer with intentional and planned efforts that increase our spirituality. Let’s heat things up with the Holy Spirit and the fruits that accompany Him. Let’s be accountable and hold one another accountable. Let’s use it as a time to reach out, touch and bring others to hear the gospel and experience life in Christ with a family called, “SouthCentral!”

SouthCentral Church Education |
By Tony Ruffin & Gloria Bell
Directors of Education
We start out commending and congratulating our teachers.
Without all of them, our Church school would not be as
successful and rewarding as it is. Then there are the
students and their parents, especially those who see to it
that their children are here. All of these components are
the start of a great Bible class. We have all of these and
more at SouthCentral Church of Christ, and we know we are
blessed. Now we just have to use our potential as God would
have us to.
At our recent Teacher’s Workshop, held on May 20th, we
presented teaching strategies and information, not only to
our current teaching staff, but to at least 8 others who
have committed to being trained to teach. We as directors
are excited over this interest and opportunity, and we will
be doing everything possible to encourage these new recruits
to continue to grow in the Lord through learning and
teaching. We will also be announcing and posting other
workshop session specifically for this new pool of potential
instructors.
The Race is On During the months of June July and August, we
will have a Sunday School Visitor’s Race! There will be two
categories: 0 to 5th grade and Middle School to Adults. In
the primary category there will be two winners. Awards will
be given on July 9th and at the end of August 27th. The
winners from Category I will win a $20 gift card to Toys R’
Us and the frontrunner from Category II will win a crisp $50
bill on August 27th. Remember this competition is for SUNDAY
bible school ONLY. However, continue to invite those
visitors on Wednesday nights.
Bible Class Review Change Beginning this month with the
Middle school class, the group of students scheduled for
review in the auditorium will make their presentations on
Wednesday night and the following Sunday morning during a
specified time at worship service. We want more of our
church to see what’s going on in Bible Class. Besides, it
also helps to build good public speaking skills among our
youth. Sister Tiffany Fitzpatrick is the teacher for the
Middle school assemblage. |

teachers in training will enjoy a dinner of delicious
Mexican food.
